About South St. Paul Residents Directory

South St. Paul has no one official book of every resident. County parcel records, recorder indexes, election data, court systems, city files, and historical directory collections each answer a different question. This private reference organizes those public routes so a name, street, or older address can be matched to the office or collection that keeps the underlying record.

Why This Reference Exists

Printed South St. Paul directories are historical sources now, yet the records behind them still exist in separate systems. Dakota County holds parcel and recorded land material. The City Clerk keeps municipal papers and request routes. Election and court sources have their own statutory limits. Saint Paul Public Library, Lawshe Memorial Museum, Dakota County Historical Society, and Minnesota Historical Society hold much of the older directory, newspaper, census, plat, and obituary material. Bringing those search paths together helps researchers identify the correct custodian before they request a record.

What the Reference Includes

  • Pages by question: the street directory for address-keyed records, the Directory Book for historical collections, and the resident lookup for one-person verification.
  • Offices and collections: Dakota County property and recording services, elections, district court, vital-record routes, city files, and local-history collections.
  • Research methods: ways to trace an address, read a city-directory entry, or compare a dated household record with another source.
  • Access boundaries: the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act, confidentiality rules, and custodian requests for material not available online.
